Community Expert Training (CET)

Pilot Project 2007 – 2009

In January 2008, SOLOS staff began negotiations with several government departments to develop a two-day training curriculum that would go beyond the basic “Shock and Awe” presentation to a more in-depth training about youth and online environments, and how to respond professionally to the issues that arise from the two.

In March of 2008, SOLOS received a grant to deliver the training in three communities in B.C. – Nanaimo, Kamloops and Prince George.

The Community Expert Trainings (CET) Workshops were based on the “Train the Trainer” model and used dynamic power points, mind mapping, dialogue, small group facilitations and guided Internet experimentations.

SOLOS developed and delivered the two-day Workshops for 3 groups of professionals who work with youth in geographically diverse areas of British Columbia. Following the Workshop, these community experts became more effective in supporting awareness, prevention and responses to online child sexual exploitation and trafficking in their respective communities. The CET Workshops targeted human service professionals; social workers, youth workers, family counselors, school administrators, school liaison officers, probation officers, restorative justice practitioners, victim services and mental health workers.

Attaining our goal of creating resilience in BC communities was successful, as reflected in the evaluation by participants who reported an increase in relevant awareness, prevention activities and distribution of educational material in their home communities.

Aboriginal Centered - Community Expert Training (CET)

In September of 2009, SOLOS was approached by the Federal Ministry of Public Safety to adapt the Community Expert Training for delivery into First Nations communities. The resulting Aboriginal Centered-Community Expert Training (ACCET) were held in the spring of 2010 in Alert Bay, Chase and the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, B.C.
